“Error while storing the user information” When Creating a User in MySQL Administrator

When trying to create a new user or change permissions in MySQL Administrator, you may get the following error: ‘Error while storing the user information. The user might have been deleted. Please refresh the user list.’ The solution to this problem is surprisingly simple however not so apparent. First, launch MySQL Query Browser and log in as root selecting mysql as the default schema.

Solution #1
Expand mysql schema on the right-hand side in the Schemata tab.
Right-click on the user table and select Edit Table.
Scroll all the way down and uncheck NOT NULL column for the authentication_string column.
Click Apply Changes

Solution #2
Run the following query in the SQL Query Area:

ALTER TABLE `user`
	CHANGE COLUMN `authentication_string` `authentication_string` TEXT NULL COLLATE 'utf8_bin' AFTER `plugin`;

Click on the Execute Query button.

That’s it!
